What is a Stylist?

Fashion stylists work across a number of different areas - individuals, corporations, fashion houses and clothing brands. Their main responsibilities include providing fashion advice, choosing and co-coordinating outfits for models in photo shoots (studio or outdoor), runways shows, actors in television and film; and choosing props and accessories and preparing them for shoots. Fashion Stylists and image consultants are highly specialised in enhancing their client’s image. But what does image really mean, and why is it so important?

The Fashion Industry

Australia has undergone a huge amount of change over the last 5 years, with the influx of international brands and retailers and the demise of many brands and retailers we have seen a fundamental change in the Australian Retail Landscape.
The value of the Australian Fashion Industry is $21 billion in retail sales and employs 37,000 people.
Fashion is so much more than clothing – it’s about the total experience, innovation, technology, sustainability, ethical and social responsibility are paramount.
Australia leads the way with its strong stance on sustainability and ethical sourcing, particularly amongst new and emerging designers.

Colour Theory

Wherever there is light, there is colour. While we think of colours as independent - this is blue, that is red - a colour is never seen alone but always in the context of other colours. Like a musical note, no one colour is "good" of "bad". Rather, it's one part of composition that as a while is pleasing or not. The colour wheel is our tool for understanding how colours relate to one another.

Understanding Trends

The aim of fashion forecasting is to predict trends about 18 months to two years ahead. It involves predicting mood, behaviour, and consumer habits by linking demographic information about consumer segments and statistics on trends in retail sales with guessing how and why people buy fashion and how tastes are changing. Fashion forecasing involves combining information about color and fabrics with socioeconomic and cultural perceptions of the fashion zeitgeist.

How To Pitch & Present

We are often required to pitch our ideas. In order for our pitch to be successful we have to plan how we can effectively present all of our points, in order to get a strong, persuasive message across to our listeners.
